Lake Baikal and Ulan Ude

I slept much better on my second night on the train; right through the first stop of the day in Irkutsk before I woke up to a very gloomy, rainy view of the grand Lake Baikal, we had been looking forward to.

And much to the disappointment of my new Chinese friend – no one selling fish! This was literally his whole reason for taking the train home, rather than flying like the rest of his friends. It did brighten up and get warmer after my Chinese lesson and we started seeing some amazing views out of the window…

We then arrived at the brightly coloured Ulan Ude station, where there was no platform food, but a few small shops and some lovely warm, sandal weather.

I went into one shop to buy a Pepsi light to go with the weather. When I came out I was approached by a man asking if I’d like some рыба (fish) from his bag. I told him ‘nyet’ but I know someone who does!

Mm fishy fishy!! He hasn’t eaten it yet. I think he was waiting for a nice lady to sell him some potatoes at the next stop…

..but there was no one there – just mosquitoes. We’ve had another lovely train day. Tomorrow evening we’ll cross the border into China which is very exciting. Now to watch the sunset behind the mountains…
